My background and what inspired me to become a teacher...

My mother is a teacher. I decided to follow in her footsteps and become a teacher too. I was also inspired by two extraordinary science teachers that taught me when I was in school. I did my master’s in science and bachelor’s in education.

My experience as a teacher...

I have been a teacher for 10 years now. This is my first year of teaching in Malnad Hippocampus International School. Before that I taught in other CBSE schools for 9 years. I teach Chemistry and Biology to students in grades 5 through 10.

I am inspired by...

I draw inspiration from two science teachers that taught me when I was in school – Uma madam and Amrita madam. Their way of teaching made a big impression on me. They paid attention to every student individually. They addressed the problems each student faced individually by giving examples, giving the student extra time even after school hours. They were very approachable and helpful. I try to be like them.

My interest outside of teaching...

No, primarily because I have two small kids. So whatever free time I have I want to spend with them.

My approach to teaching...

According to me, when a teacher enters a class, they should not simply teach, but find ways to provide practical experience to the students. With practical experience, the students understand new concepts better. They can apply the knowledge they acquire in real life. My school supports me and the other teachers to do that by providing resources, training and through programs like XSeed and Aikyam. Most other schools do not do that. Students do not receive any practical training until they go to college.

My experience with Aikyam...

Aikyam is a new concept for me, so I was very curious about it. As I learn more, I see that in Aikyam we are allowing the students to express their thoughts and creativity. I saw that from the very first activity – creating a logo for the school. I was impressed by the students’ creativity. I started to think like them too. I did my own logo, taught my children to do the same. As a teacher we learn something every day. By participating in Aikyam, I'm also learning along with the students. And I share what I learn from the Aikyam program with other students, my children, and my friends.

The students are also very curious. In our school, we don’t have a fixed time for Aikyam club. The students are always asking me when I will conduct the next session. They enjoy the activities. They are bringing new ideas and solutions, talking to people in the community. They are expressing their curiosity as well as thoughts and ideas through Aikyam activities.
