My background and how I became a teacher...

I graduated from college with a bachelor’s degree in commerce (B.Com) specializing in accounting. My intention was to enter the Indian Civil Service, so I was preparing for the qualifying exams held by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). However, in 2020, I lost my father to Covid. It was a devastating loss, and I couldn’t focus on my preparations. I took a year’s break after which I applied for a teacher’s position at this school. I was fortunate to be selected as a science teacher. Teaching has been a blessing for me personally. It has been therapeutic.

My experience as a teacher...

This is my first job as a teacher. I have been at the Vidhya Vaibhav Hippocampus Public School for 5 months now. I teach science to children in grades 5 and 6. Even though I am new to the role, I have tremendous support from school management and the other teachers in the school. I am exploring and learning. Most of all, the children – their curiosity and enthusiasm – give me the greatest satisfaction. I am loving the experience so far.

My inspiration...

In the beginning, I wasn’t sure if I could do the job as a teacher. The school trustee has been a greater support for me, encouraging me, pushing me, boosting my confidence. The school principal has also been a great influence on me with her guidance. I have a great connection with her, and she makes me feel very comfortable in my new role. The other teachers in this school are all very approachable and helpful, sharing ideas and tips. They are like family. The school is literally like a second home to me.

I also believe that you should be an inspiration to yourself. I literally stand in front of a mirror and introspect, thinking about things that I could have done better and how to do correct myself. Self-reflection leads to self-motivation.

My interests outside of teaching...

I continue to prepare for my UPSC exam. It is a tough, highly competitive exam. It takes a lot or preparation and patience to do well.  It is still my goal to be of service to the country by being a member of the Civil Service.

My experience with Aikyam...

I didn’t get what the program was all about at the beginning. I couldn’t figure out what the children are doing and why. Subsequently, I attended one of the meetings with the Aikyam team and I got a much clearer picture. I am amazed by how the children, given the opportunity, express themselves, show awareness of the problems in their community and come up with interesting, unique, and innovative solutions. The teachers are learning in the process as well because the children come up with surprising and thoughtful ideas. I am inspired by that. I am enjoying the experience just as much as the children are.
