My background and how I became a teacher...

After I completed my bachelor’s degree in science from a college affiliated to Bangalore University, I went to work for a bank.  I stopped working there and remained at home when my first child was born. The principal of Hippocampus SSVM School called me about a teacher vacancy in the school and encouraged me to apply for the job. At first, I wasn’t sure I wanted to do that, but the school offered me training to get me started. Now I am very happy to be a teacher and very grateful for the principal who opened this career opportunity for me.

About my school...

Hippocampus SSVM school is in a rural area, in a village near Kanakapura. I grew up in the same area as well. The children that attend the school come from several nearby villages.

My experience as a teacher...

I teach science to students in grades 6 and 7. I also teach environmental studies for grades 4 and 5. I enjoy working with my colleagues and the principal. Most of all, the children make me happy to be a teacher. They are cute and nice, and they listen to whatever I tell them or ask of them, without any back answers. I am very lucky to be a teacher to these children.

When I am not teaching...

I enjoy music and dance and reading books. I also intend to enroll to obtain a bachelor’s degree in education.

My Aikyam experience...

I believe that the Aikyam program is very useful and very helpful to the children. They get the opportunity to work as a team. In our school, the team is made up of children across multiple grades. Aikyam activities increase their communication skills and thinking skills. Usually, other than school, the children learn by watching TV or the internet. Now they are learning from what they discover in their communities. As their Aikyam facilitator, I learn a lot from them too.
